Unveiling the top-50 most prestigious consulting firms

Unveiling the top-50 most prestigious consulting firmsUnveiling the top-50 most prestigious consulting firmsThe 89 firms included in this years Vault Consulting Survey were asked to rate each consulting firm in the survey on a scale from 1 to 10 based on prestige, with 10 being the most prestigious. Consultants were unable to rate their own firm, and they were asked to rate only those firms with which they were familiar. Vault collected the survey results and averaged the score for each firm. The firms were then ranked, with the highest score being No. 1, down to No. 50. Remember that Vaults top-50 prestigious consulting firms are chosen by practicing consultants at top consulting firms. Vault does not choose or influence ansicht rankings. The rankings measure perceived prestige (as determined by consulting professionals) and not revenue, size or lifestyle. This years prestige ranking shows a startlingly low rate of movement from last year. The top-10 firms are entirely the same, w ith some slight adjustments in positioning HR consulting firm Mercer LLC moved up two spots, while both Monitor Group and PwC moved down one notch. Firms that made some of the larger jumps in the rankings (A.T. Kearney, ZS Associates, Diamond Management Tech Consultants) suggest that the factors that improved firms perception in the industry are stability in the face of recession and targeted industry focus. Strategic IT consulting is on the rise as companies seek to streamline their processes and cut down on back-office costs, and health care consulting will continue to play an integral role as the new legislation continues to unfold. Weve also added some new firms into the mix this year. Grant Thornton (No. 28) is a large, well-known accounting/consulting shop, while The Cambridge Group (No. 35) has made a name for itself in the growth strategy space, focusing on customer demand. We also dug deeper into some of the hot industries right now, adding a few more health care consulti ng shops (The Hackett Group, Campbell Alliance Group and The Chartis Group), and a couple from the increasingly-in-demand turnaround management realm (see CRG Partners Group). All in all, our prestige list provides a comprehensive roadmap of whos who in the consulting industryranging from big consulting shops to smaller, niche firms, and spanning a vast swath of industries. Stay tuned next Tuesday for our release of specific practice area rankings.

How to Approach a Competitor About a Job

How to Approach a Competitor About a JobHow to Approach a Competitor About a JobThe bottom-line on non-competes and the ethics of employers who want your insider knowledge.Imagine youre an account executive working an important trade show. A top competitor approaches you about a job opportunity and the next morning, over breakfast, youre offered a chance to double your money and earn a fast-track promotion to the executive ranks. Next step, Just send us your resume. Can you legally and ethically jump to the other side? What should you - and shouldnt you - put on your resume and cover letter? How do you make this type of move without burning bridges?Your No. 1 issue is CNCIf youre thinking about changing sides, your No. 1 issue is a non-compete clause or covenant-leid-to-compete (CNC).If you have not signed a CNC, then youre probably free and clear.Otherwise, to avoid a potential lawsuit against you and your new employer, you must get advice from a lawyer who specializes in employmen t law. Companies can and do enforce these agreements (except in California, where theyre generally illegal).Sometimes the CNC or non-compete clause is a separate document, and sometimes its buried in a job application. You might have signed one and forgotten all about it (Important point These agreements usually apply to your companys clients as well as its competitors.)Non-compete agreements are especially common with technology jobs because competition among companies is fierce and potential employees are usually willing to sign anything in a weak job market. So before a competitor considers hiring you, theyll demand your full disclosure. What to put - and leave off - of your resume and cover letterBe very discreet. Show utmost respect for your current (or former) employer in the resume and during the interview. Never disclose any insider tidbits because any negative information reflects badly on your own character and loyalty. Rehearse your story in great detail, and dont let th e interviewer lure you into this trap.Tweaking your resume for a competitor is easy. Just remove any items - direct or indirect - that might involve the competitor. If youre in sales, for example, dont highlight any competitive wins youve made against this particular employer.Never use personal pronouns (we, our, or their, for example). This rule applies to all resume writing, and its especially important when youre sending it to a competitor. If you are making the first move, use the cover letter to reveal that you are (or were) working for a direct competitor. Option Replace your companys actual name with COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL and just note its in the same marketplace. If youre sure that you have not signed a non-compete agreement with your current employer, definitely mention that in a nachtrag (P.S.) at the end of your e-mail or cover letter.Absolutely mention a mutual, trusted referral in the first line of your e-mail or cover letter, for example Our mutual colleague, Mary Smith , suggested that I contact you regarding the ABC position at Company XYZ.The cheating-spouse syndromeWorking for a competitor can catapult your career to the next level because outsiders value you more highly (especially if the management of your own company has come to take you for granted). And the competitor that hires you benefits because youre ready to hit the ground running and start producing. But be sensitive to the emotions a move may provoke in the company you left behind. As you make your move, be prepared for some angry emotions and accusations of betrayal from former colleagues. Remember, theyre still with the company, and youve suddenly redefined yourself as a competitor.Be respectful of their feelings, and brace yourself for some blowback as you advance confidently towards your career goals.

Turns out hand sanitizer is actually useless especially during flu season

Turns out greifhand sanitizer is actually useless especially during flu seasonTurns out hand sanitizer is actually useless especially during flu seasonWashing my hands is a drag. It requires physical effort and accessories like towels. The trial is greater still when it comes to washing my childrens hands. And because my children are lazierthan I amand far less concerned about proper hygiene, its so much easier to pump out somehand sanitizerinto their little palms and call it a day. Unfortunately, washing your hands with soap and water is the single most effective way to prevent disease, especially duringflu season. Hand sanitizer, however, isnt all that good at sanitizing hands- especially when it has alcohol content below 60%.Many studies have found that sanitizers with an alcohol concentration between 6095% are more effective at killing germs than those with a lower alcohol concentration or non-alcohol-based hand sanitizers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Preventi on. Although alcohol-based hand sanitizers can inactivate many types of microbes very effectively when used correctly Soap and water are more effective than hand sanitizers.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreEven if you manage to get your hands on some hospital-grade hand sanitizer, the high alcohol content isnt enough to guarantee protection during flu season. Because most people do not use hand sanitizer appropriately. Studies have shown that hand sanitizers work best when applied to the entire hand, not just the palm. And they work best in clinical settings, where the hands are basically clean but may have come in contact with dangerous pathogens. Soiled hands, commonly associatedwith kids or parenting, simply do not mix with hand sanitizer.Hands may become very greasy or soiled in community settings, such as after people handle food, play sports, work in the garden, or go camp ing or fishing, according to the CDC. When hands are heavily soiled or greasy, hand sanitizers may not work well.Lets say you manage to procure and apply 95 percent alcohol-based hand sanitizer to your otherwise clean hands. Eventhen, it might not work. Hand sanitizer is less effective than hand washing when it comes to killing specific pathogens, such asClostridium difficile, and likely cannot remove or inactivate harmful chemicals. Indeed, studies have shownthat people who exclusively use hand sanitizer, instead of soap and water, have higher levels of pesticides in their bodies. At the end of the day, hand sanitizer is a good way to protect yourself and your family from disease when youre dealing with clean hands, or unable to get to the sink. But at home, with soiled hands, soap and water is the safest bet- thrashing children notwithstanding. This article originally appeared on Fatherly. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know yo ur social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people
